Trouble ahead! Stormy waters!
My hand hurts still. I didn't sleep well. Worse really, I couldn't get to sleep forever and then when I finally did, it was then that I didn't sleep well.
Then I woke up with my head hurting from not sleeping well and my neck hurting, probably from sleeping wrong. And my hand still hurting. I may need to rest it for the day. That would be a big set back. But I can't afford to wreck my hand for this little bit of fun that is the National Novel Writing Month.
I may have to give up on my goal of sisty thousand wonderful words and settle for the more mundane fifty thousand run of the mill words. Push, push, push!

Some breaks are necessary. Ah yes, but some necessary breaks get unnecessarily prolonged. This was one such but it is over now.
However, although it is over, it has given birth to an idea which even now tugs at me, asking me to side track myself and write a little program to write a book of progressions for me. I think I may have to give in and take a shot at it sometime today.

Sarah spent the night in her sleeping bag on the beach just north of the Sebastian Inlet.
She woke up to the sunrise over the ocean and got up and stretched. She went for a walk. North for a few miles and then turned around.
On the way back, she saw something glinting down at the water's edge.

She went down and picked up a half of a gold doubloon. She was floored at the coincidence. And looking at it closely, she was even more floored at the possibility of an even greater coincindece.

She jogged back to her stuff and packed it all up and headed back to her car.
When she got there, she took the half coin from yesterday from the spot up under the dash where she had hidden it and brought yesterday's piece and today's piece together. This was not possible! And yet the two halves fit together to form an perfect, imperfect whole.
Something was scratched into the back of the coin. An F on one half and an H on the other half and a lightening bolt underlining both letters, spanning both halfs and fitting perfectly together.
Not possible. Here in her hands. Not possible.

Fulcrum woke up on the porch when the rooster crowed just before the sun came up. He was groggy and dirty but happy. he had dug around in the sand again for a couple of hours last night and, while he had not found his intect cache, he had found one of the silver coins from it.
So this morning he had two questions to ponder.
Would he find the rest of his cache?
What could he do to turn this silver coin into modern money? He had a feeling that it would not be a good idea to go into town and try and spend it as is.
And then a third question that could use and answer occured to him...
How had this coin been seperated from the rest of his cache?

Over an hour of sputtering effort and just over a quarter of the day's absolute minimum or an eighth of the proper day's output. That would mean well over eight hours to get where I need to be at this pace gentle reader. No way! No how! I will either have to pick up the pace or cut back on the goal or both. I will hope for the former and, if I do that, be OK with having to accept the latter.

Fulcrum wonderd about asking the man who he had crewed for yesterday if he had any ideas but he really could not afford to talk to anyone about this and that might set off an unfortunate chain of events. And he really did not need such a chain in his life now.
He decided to bury the coin again somehwere out of the way and save it as an insurance policy. He could always melt it down and then try moving it if need be. That would make his being found out a bit less likely he thought.
In the mean time, he would try and earn a bit here and a bit there at odd jobs and keep any eye out for any safe but less honourable income opportunities. He was a pirate after all and he had not been doing too good a job of being disreputable since he had come to this time.

Then again Fulcrum thought it might just be best to keep his nose clean in this new world until he knew more about how it operated. It was one thing to be a pirate in your own world and where you had your pirate mates to back you up, it might be quite another thing altogether to try and live the pirate life in a strange world where you were all alone and understood next to nothing. Then again, people were people, weren't they? Perhaps he should start looking for and hanging out in the places where people like he had been in his old life gathered for relaxation and reinforcement.
That might be an avenue he should pursue. Nah, stay out of trouble for a while.

Sarah checked back in to the surfer motel on the beach where she had stayed a few days before. She asked for and got the same room.
She put her bag in the room and hid the two pieces of the coin in seperate spots and stripped off and got in the shower intending to take a long and hot one.

It is probably wildly inefficient. I think for one thing I should not be opening and closing the file so much. I think I may just open it at the start and close it at the end next time and see how that looks.
After this run, I will make the changes and see how the new one seems to work.

I am inching up towards one thousand and five hundred words now gentle reader and that is a good thing. I has been a lot of time spent at it though.
Granted, I am not writing the whole time exactly, but by the same token, I am not able to go off and do other things I might like to do so that while it is true I am not writing, I am still sort of devoting the time to writing.

Hmmmm. Perhaps I spoke too soon on it appearing faster. The shell out to wc may be an issue. I wonder if I should try and count the words in perl itself. I will look into that.
